Building and Environment

Naparima Bowl is presently comprised of three sections. The amphitheatre to the south is made of concrete tiers on grade that is supported on the soil. The amphitheatre slopes down towards the stage in a direction from south to north with a radial dimension of approximately 30 metres. This area is not covered (as yet), by roof and is therefore exposed to the elements of the environment. It’s holding capacity (seated) is 2,500 persons.

Approximately south of the stage is a single storey steel structure with a lightweight roof. This building currently houses the CEO’s office, together with the accounting, secretarial, messaging and watchmen service areas. The approximate dimension of this building in plan is 60 metres west by 30 metres north to south.

The main building in the Naparima Bowl houses the auditorium, the stage, the control room and the flytower. The dressing rooms are housed in the wing which runs east-west as an adjunct to the auditorium. A public bar is based at the eastern end of the wing. This bar is adjacent to an open air patio to the north where another bar is located at the eastern edge of the paved patio space.

The flytower is that area around the stage in the auditorium that has mechanisms and supports for the stage curtains and lights. The flytower part of the building has two levels and a lightweight roof and it is located south of the auditorium but north of the amphitheatre. The auditorium is located between the stage and the control room. The control room is two stories high and it contains the audiovisual equipment and control equipment for the stage effects. The auditorium building that includes the flytower is comprised of a steel braced frame structure with masonry walls and a lightweight roof. The overall plan dimension of the main building is 33 metres by 28 metres east to west. The auditorium seats no more than 500 persons. There is an orchestra pit at the base of the proscenium stage that is 32ft deep by 50 ft wide.
